... The Next Novel
Work has already started on the next novel, tentatively named The Munich Trap.
What is it about? The 'elevator speech' description is:
Helped by the Traitor Prince, only British agent David Tennant can stop a British aristocrat from assassinating Hitler when Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain visits Germany to negotiate the Munich Agreement in September 1938.
... Where am I?
Most of the research has been done (including some research on the ground in London, Berlin and Prague). The plot line has been worked out and is just about done. Many of the characters have been fleshed out. I will actually start writing the first draft in a few months.
... The genesis of The Munich Trap
A second hand book on the Munich Agreement sucked me into its description of the three visits to Germany paid by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in 1938 to negotiate a resolution to the 'Czechoslovakia Question'. The idea of combining an historical event with a thriller came to me when I read the last page and put the book down. One of those 'wow' moments ...
... Lords, Warlords and Politicians
The hero is called in by Lord Halifax to check out rumours that an attempt will be made to assassinate the German Chancellor Adolf Hitler. He is plunged into the strange world of agents, double agents, dupes, warlords, and fools.
Suspicion falls on Unity Mitford, the daughter of Baron Redesdale, an English landowner and father of the five Mitford Sisters and their brother. The Mitfords trace their faimly back to the 14th century. Diana Mitford (who married Mosley, the British fascist) and Unity travelled to Germany several times and met with Hitler.
Unity stalked Hitler until she was introduced to him in his favourite hotel; she met with him more than one hundred times over the four years before the Second World War broke out.
Characters in The Munich Trap range from members of Nancy Astor's infamous Cliveden Set, to Nazi officers and business men.
The hero tracks down the conspiracy, aided by the Traitor Prince (Prince Charles Edwards) and Admiral Canaris, head of the Abwehr, the German military intelligence service. Ciano, the son-in-law of Mussolini, plays a role, as does Eva Braun.
... Where danger stalks
Tennant flits from London to the Berghof, Hitler's residence and the site of the first meeting between Hitler and Chamberlain, to Bad Godesberg, the second meeting, to Berlin, and finally to Munich, for the third and last meeting.
